Based on the work of Dr. Nonie K. Lesaux鈥檚 Literacy Briefs on The Science of Reading\, Tim Shanahan鈥檚 research\, and Steve Graham鈥檚 and Michael Hebert鈥檚 Report from the Carnegie Foundation\, this workshop will emphasize the connections between reading and writing in both English and content area classrooms. As we have been working diligently to improve both abilities in our classrooms\, research connects the two consistently and in a variety of ways to improve both. In this interactive workshop\, teachers will explore some of the research and practical and efficient ways of applying what they learn to their classrooms. Even though we understand better that reading and writing are reciprocal processes that help students learn\, teachers find it challenging to help students use the skills in one to improve skills in the other. By exploring research related to The Science of Reading as well as the thoughts of experts in literacy\, we can develop lessons and units that combine reading and writing to improve both skills across the disciplines. In this interactive workshop\, participants will review research regarding The Science of Reading and Reading/Writing Connections\, discuss these connections\, and walk away with skills and ideas that will help their students improve both reading and writing skills in all content areas.
